Since the retirement of its airborne component, British deterrence relies solely on four Vanguard-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs), which were commissioned between 1994 and 1999. In line with the Continuous At Sea Deterrent (CASD) concept, the Royal Navy ensures that at least one of these submarines is always on patrol.
