Since the loss of the ARA San Juan eight years ago, the Argentine Navy (ARA – Armada de la República Argentina) has lacked operational submarines to monitor its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), which spans over one million square kilometers. Due to budget constraints, the modernization of the ARA Santa Cruz has been delayed.
