Germany’s Navy and the Acquisition of P-8A Poseidon Aircraft

The German Navy initially planned to replace its eight P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft concurrently with the eighteen Atlantique 2 aircraft of the French Navy, as part of the Maritime Airborne Warfare Systems (MAWS) project initiated by Paris and Berlin in 2018.

However, two years later, the German Ministry of Defense determined that modernizing the P-3C Orion to keep them operational until 2030 would be prohibitively expensive. Consequently, it opted to retire these aircraft as soon as possible and ordered five P-8A Poseidon aircraft from Boeing as replacements. This decision also included rejecting a French proposal to acquire four Atlantique 2 aircraft upgraded to standard 6, significantly impacting the MAWS project, which has struggled to recover since.

In 2021, Germany confirmed the purchase of five P-8A Poseidon aircraft for €1.43 billion, stating that this acquisition was intended to provide the MarineFlieger with an “interim capability.” Two years later, an additional order for three P-8A Poseidon aircraft was placed with Boeing for €1.1 billion, funded by the Bundeswehr’s special fund of €100 billion. This order also included simulators and various equipment.

This latest order for P-8A Poseidon aircraft was anticipated, as it allowed the MarineFlieger to replace its P-3C Orion fleet, which has since been sold to Portugal.

Nevertheless, the planned fleet of eight P-8A Poseidon aircraft may not be sufficient, as Berlin appears to be considering additional orders, especially with the first delivery to the MarineFlieger imminent.

This is suggested by the German Ministry of Defense’s budget proposal for the fiscal year 2026, which allocates an additional €2.8 billion in commitment credits for the “P-8A Poseidon” program for the period 2028-2030. Previously, only €700 million was earmarked for 2028-2030.

Observers speculate that this increase in commitment authorizations will not only facilitate the acquisition of equipment such as buoys, torpedoes, or simulators for the P-8A but also additional aircraft, as noted by the specialized German site Hartpunkt.

This expectation aligns with the Deutsche Marine’s strategic plan for 2035, updated last spring. The “Kurs Marine 2025” emphasizes the need for eight to twelve P-8A Poseidon aircraft and an equal number of Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) drones dedicated to naval operations.

For context, the P-8A Poseidon, developed from a B-737 platform, is equipped with a multi-mode surface radar AN/APY-10 designed by Raytheon, a synthetic aperture radar AN/APS-128, and a passive detection system AN/ALR-73. It can be armed with Mk-50 torpedoes, Mk-57 and Mk-101 depth charges, Mk-55 and Mk-56 mines, and AGM-84 Harpoon missiles.
