Operation EUNAVFOR Atalanta, launched in 2008 by the European Union, was initially established to combat maritime piracy in the Indian Ocean, particularly off the coast of Somalia, where piracy was escalating at the time. In addition to its primary mission, the operation also aimed to protect vessels associated with the World Food Programme (WFP).
Since its inception, the operation has been extended multiple times, adapting to evolving maritime security challenges.
