Navy Enhances Operational Capabilities in La Réunion with New Patrol Vessel

The Auguste Techer, the third of six overseas patrol vessels (POM) designated for the French Navy, has recently arrived at its home port in La Réunion. This vessel represents a significant enhancement in maritime security capabilities in the region, particularly in monitoring the expansive Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of 2.8 million km².

Background and Development of the Auguste Techer

Originally constructed by a Norwegian shipyard in the late 1990s, the vessel has undergone several transformations. Previously known as the fishing trawler L’Apache, it was seized by the patrol vessel Albatros in 2004 for illegal fishing activities around the Kerguelen Islands. In 2011, it was repurposed into a military vessel and renamed Le Malin, replacing older P400 patrol vessels that had been in service.

Operational Enhancements of the Auguste Techer

Despite the presence of surveillance frigates such as the Nivôse and Floréal, the Armed Forces in the southern Indian Ocean (FAZSOI) have faced challenges in maintaining adequate surveillance capabilities. The arrival of the Auguste Techer is a welcome development, as it is equipped with advanced surveillance technologies, including:

  • Combat Management System: Lyncea
  • Surveillance Radar: Kelvin Hughes Mk11 SharpEye (X-band)
  • Satellite Communication Capabilities
  • Armament: 20 mm remote-controlled cannon and four machine guns
  • Drone Capability: Can accommodate a VTOL drone
  • Boat Capacity: Three vessels (two fast boats and one support boat)

Future Deployments and Strategic Importance

The Auguste Techer was launched in December 2023 in Saint-Malo and underwent sea trials before arriving at its base in La Réunion in August 2025. This vessel is part of a broader military programming law aimed at enhancing France’s maritime presence and sovereignty in its overseas territories. The minister of the Armed Forces highlighted the vessel’s role in combating trafficking, defending national interests, and providing assistance during crises.

Upcoming Vessels in the Series

The next POM, Jean Tranape, is expected to join the Auguste Bénébig in New Caledonia next year, followed by Philippe Bernardino and Félix Éboué, which will replace Le Malin in 2027.

In summary, the introduction of the Auguste Techer significantly bolsters the French Navy’s operational capabilities in La Réunion, ensuring enhanced surveillance and security in the region.
