For political reasons, the Spanish naval aviation [Flotilla de Aeronaves, FLOAN] cannot replace the thirteen EAV-8B Harrier II [or Matador] short takeoff and vertical landing attack aircraft operated by the 9th “Escuadrilla de aeronave” from the amphibious assault ship Juan Carlos I. The only feasible solution would be to acquire F-35B fighters.
