Following the cancellation of its order for twelve French-designed Shortfin Barracuda submarines due to the AUKUS pact signed in September 2021, Australia is set to acquire eight nuclear attack submarines (SSNs), including three Virginia-class submarines from the United States. The remaining five submarines, designated SSN-AUKUS, are expected to be developed and constructed domestically.
Australia’s investment of €6.7 billion aims to extend the operational lifespan of its aging Collins-class submarines until 2040. This strategic decision reflects the nation’s commitment to enhancing its naval capabilities amidst evolving regional security dynamics.
