In June 2023, the Netherlands and Belgium confirmed the ASWF (Anti-Submarine Warfare Frigate) program by notifying shipbuilder Damen, in partnership with Thales Nederland, of an order for four next-generation frigates totaling €4 billion. For Belgium, this program is intended to replace its two aging anti-submarine frigates.
However, with the ASWF program facing significant challenges, Belgium risks being without frigate capabilities for several years.
