Since the retirement of the eighteen Bréguet Br 1150 Atlantic aircraft in 2017, the Aeronautica Militare has been operating four ATR-72MP or P-72A aircraft, derived from the civil ATR 72, to conduct maritime patrol missions. These aircraft are equipped with the ATOS (Airborne Tactical Observation and Surveillance) mission system, a Seaspray 7300E radar, and the Star Safire 380 HD electro-optical sensor.

Recently, Italian defense contractor Leonardo confirmed the sale of four C-27MPA maritime patrol aircraft to Saudi Arabia.
